What is Different OLT, ODN, ONU and ONT in FTTx Network?

Fiber Optical Access Network (Click here to know more products of access networks) is an access network that uses light as the transmission medium, replacing copper wires to connect individual households. A fiber access network typically consists of three components: the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), the Optical Network Unit (ONU), and the Optical Distribution Network (ODN). Among these, the OLT and ONU serve as the core components of the fiber access network.

Optical Access Network Structure

What is an OLT?

OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. An OLT is a telecommunications central office device that connects to fiber optic trunk lines. It functions similarly to a switch or router in traditional communication networks, serving as an entry point for external networks and an exit point for internal networks. Deployed at the central office, its primary functions include traffic scheduling, buffer control, and providing passive optical network interfaces to users while allocating bandwidth. Simply put, it performs two key roles: upstream, it handles access to the PON network; downstream, it distributes acquired data across the ODN network to all ONU user terminals.

What is an ONU?

ONU stands for Optical Network Unit. It serves two primary functions: selectively receiving broadcasts sent by the OLT and responding to the OLT when it needs to receive specific data; collecting and buffering Ethernet data sent by users, then transmitting this buffered data to the OLT according to the assigned transmission window.

In FTTx networks (click here for a quick overview of FTTx), ONU deployment methods vary by access type: - FTTC (Fiber To The Curb): ONU placed in the neighborhood's central equipment room. - FTTB (Fiber To The Building): ONU placed in the building's wiring closet. - FTTH (Fiber To The Home): ONU placed within the residential user's premises.

What is an ONT?

ONT stands for Optical Network Terminal, serving as the final unit in FTTH deployments. Commonly known as an “optical modem,” it functions similarly to an xDSL modem. An ONT is an optical network terminal deployed at the end-user location, while an ONU refers to an optical network unit that may be connected to additional network segments before reaching the end-user. An ONT is a component of the ONU.

What is ODN?

What is ODN?

ODN stands for Optical Distribution Network, serving as the physical optical transmission channel between OLT and ONU. Its primary function is to facilitate bidirectional optical signal transmission. Typically composed of optical fiber cables, optical connectors, optical splitters, and supporting equipment for installing and connecting these components, the most critical part is the splitter.
